Closing Keynote -Morgen Bromell, CEO of Thurst

Opacity for the LGBTQIA+ community: Reframing tech platforms

How are queer, trans, non-binary, and agender folks creating community online? This talk begins to unravel how social and parasocial dynamics have shifted for LGBTQIA+ folks online, the impact on marginalized folks within our communities, strategies to better evaluate if an app, online platform, or platform is accessible to you, and what creators, brands, and organizers can do to better reach and accommodate trans folks within these virtual spaces.

I want to expand our imagination around what we can expect and what we deserve in terms of corporate and creator accountability, product design and functionality, and the consequential impact on how we see ourselves and each other. One of the goals of this talk is to provide more insight into the back-end decisions that guide our collective sense of self and community online and embolden folks to begin to shape the digital spheres they occupy.

Morgen Bromell is a 28-year-old founder and technologist working to make platforms more accessible to marginalized folks through community-centric research and conscientious design. As the founder of Thurst, a dating app for LGBTQIA+ people, they continuously study all aspects of queer community building, particularly how queer and trans people use digital resources and online platforms to navigate our world and reimagine it. Morgen began their interest in studying the intersections of LGBTQIA+ cultures and digital platforms while in university and working as a youth activist in Brooklyn, NY. They are deeply committed to queer and trans justice and see intentional development and political education as their praxis, inspired by the Stonewall elders, queer and trans activists and educators who guided them in their formative years. Morgen's focus on queer organizing, mindful research, and outreach has blossomed into a deep connectedness to various queer and trans communities, creators, founders, and movement workers across the world. Apart from tech, Morgen is interested in gardening in Brooklyn, taro bubble tea, chasing after their Doberman puppy, and trying new vegan recipes.
